War Memorial like Auschwich

Date Posted: 2000-05-27

Two Frenchmen and a Swede are visiting Okinawa to take photos for a presentation called “Japan through the Eyes of Europe.” The three will stay here until the end of May.

Anders Pettersson, the Swedish member of the group is concentrating on the human aspect of the project says that in his opinion Okinawans are rather shy but bright people.

He has concentrated on taking pictures of people in the Heiwa Dori and Kokusai Dori areas in Naha City. Stefan Dureau from France is concentrating on the theme of Okinawa’s war. He has been taking pictures of Okinawan war memorials and Himeyuri Park.

“In some respects, the Okinawan war memorial reminds me of the museum in Auschwich and other European war memorials,” Dureau said.

Gerald Landau takes pictures of subjects pertaining to Okinawan - European contacts throughout the history. He observes that Okinawa and Europe have had a surprisingly many contacts, as witnessed by a large number of Europeans who are buried here. “This really has opened my eyes to a fact that I did not know existed,” Landau said.
