Leftist Hopes for Big Game

Date Posted: 2000-05-19

A coalition of leftist parties has asked the current Naha Mayor, Kosei Oyadomari to become a candidate for one more term as mayor. Oyadomari has announced his decision to retire before. The opposition, led by the Liberal Democratic Party, have been sharpening their spears for some time in high hopes of bringing home the big game trophy of the mayoral post.

A delegation led by Senshun Arakaki, the Chairman of Okinawa Socialist Libertarian Uhnion and Shosei Taira, the party General Secretary, visited Oyadomari yesterday in order to persuade him to run for one more term.

At the end of the meeting, Oyadomari reportedly promised to reconsider. “We cannot afford to let the opposition candidate win the mayor’s post in Naha City. It would be a disaster for the citizens,” the incumbent Oyadomari said. However, he said that he needs a few days to think over the matter.
