Date Posted: 2000-05-19

20 central Okinawa located junkyards formed an association yesterday, in order to promote recycling of spare parts from junked cars.

Takemitsu Miyagi was elected chairman of the new association. The new chairman said that they aim to change the publicís perception of discarded cars.

He said few people realize it costs •15,000 to •25,000 to throw away a car. This encourages people to leave their cars on vacant lots and forests.

Okinawa Prefecture officials are also promoting ways to recycle junked cars, and encourage the re-use of parts. There are more than 200 junkyards in Okinawa and members of the new association invite everyone to join.
