GOJ to pay cleanup costs for Chatan waste oil site

Date Posted: 2002-02-15

National Defense Facilities Agency Director General Takehiko Shimaguchi on Feb. 9 visited a site in Chatan Town where drums of waste oil were discovered last month. Shimaguchi later met with Mayor Choichi Hentona at the town offices and said that the government of Japan would take prompt action to improve the situation in cooperation with the prefecture. His statement ensured that expenses for removal of the oil would be assumed by the national government even before the origin of the waste had been confirmed. It had been previously reported that the town would have to bear removal costs until the source of the polluting oil was determined. Meanwhile, Chatan Town finished removing the drums and polluted soil on Feb. 10. Confounding earlier estimates that there were approximately 20 drums buried underground, the town removed 136 drums of oil and over 200 tons of soil from the site, taking almost a week to complete the operation.
