Okinawa City to Get New Music Town

Date Posted: 2000-05-05

Okinawa City’s Nakanomachi area, a maze of bars and discos outside Kadena Gate 2 which until recently was under curfew for US military members, is to become the city built on rock’n roll.

The plan, called Nakanomachi Music Town, features hotels, shopping malls, concert halls, outdoor stages and recording studios. It was first unveiled back in 1997, but recently it got a boost when Okinawa City’s Goya area was declared to be the most resident-friendly urban area in Japan. The plan calls for the construction to begin in 2001 and to be finished by 2003.

The initial budget for the plan is ¥6.8 billion. It is to be financed jointly by Okinawa City and from the national budget. Okinawa City Mayor Masakazu Nakasone says that the new Music Town will become the “New Face of Okinawa City.”
