Early Start For Wrangling Over Mayoral Candidate

Date Posted: 2000-05-05

The Naha City Mayoral Election is scheduled to be held in November but intra-party wrangling over candidate nomination is already well under way. Conservatives are thought to be well poised to capture the mayor’s post when the incumbent Kosei Oyadomari retires. Oyadomari represents a leftist coalition.

The major headache for the conservatives has been the existence of two rival candidates, threatening to divide the vote. Now the situation seems to be under control, after Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine threw his support behind Takeshi Onaga, the current Chief Secretatry of the Okinawa Chapter of the Liberal Democratic Party.

His rival, Noriake Kakazu, made a statement yesterday pledging to withdraw his candidacy, after a phone call from the governor. “I understand and agree with the party decision,” Kakazu said in a statement yesterday.
