Mangroves Planted, River Cleaned

Date Posted: 2000-05-05

Twenty members of the Yuyu Festival Organizing Committee of Kadena Town planted new mangroves in the Hija River that flows through Kadena Town. The planting ceremony is a part of the Hija River restoration project that started seven years ago.

The group also removed trash from the river. An hour’s effort netted a heap of plastic bottles, old tires and even a whole car.

A high-school student taking part in the effort said “even though the river belongs to everyone, it should not mean that it is everyone’s dumping ground. This river is beautiful and much cleaner than I thought, so we should strive to make it enjoyable to everyone.”
