Naha Court to Assess Environmental Damage

Date Posted: 2000-05-05

Naha District Court made its first decision in the case of local environmental groups vs. Okinawa Prefecture, yesterday. The environmental groups, who are against construction of new roads and other landscaping in northern Okinawa, took their cause to the court and sued Okinawa prefecture.

The groups claim the construction destroys the habitat of yambarukuina and other rare and threatened species that live in the area’s jungles. They also blame the prefecture for causing red soil flows into the ocean, which causes the corals to die.

The court decided to conduct an on-site survey in areas around Kunigami Village to assess the groups’ claim. In particular, the groups claim that the prefecture failed to take any precautions to prevent environmental damage when it constructed roads and other facilities in the area. The group demands that the prefecture should repay the money spent on the construction.
