Bumper Bonito Catch Starts Season

Date Posted: 2000-05-05

The annual bonito fishing season got a good start yesterday in Toguchi Bay, Motobu. Fishing boat Tokuyo Maru 11 was the first one to reach the port with a full seven tons of bonito onboard.

The Tokuyo Maru had left the port at 1 a.m. the same morning, bound for the local fishermen’s association buoy off Iheya Island and returned at 11 a.m. The captain of the boat, Yoken Gushiken, said that this year seemed set to be the best in recent memory.

“Not only are bonito plentiful, but they are bigger too,” Gushiken said. The annual bonito fishing season stretches from the beginning of May through the end of August. Most of the fish is eaten raw as kazuotataki, or smoked and made into flakes, to be used as seasoning in soups and other foods.
