Okinawa’s Tokyo Hotel Broke

Date Posted: 2000-05-05

Okinawa Prefecture owns a hotel in Tokyo’s Shijuku ward, but the facility has fallen on hard times from the very beginning. The hotel was opened in 1997 and was intended mainly for the use of prefectural officials on their business and leisure trips to the nation’s capital.

Officials reponsible for the operation of the hotel say that despite the record bargain rate of only ¥3,360 per night, the hotel has an occupancy of only 34 percent. The 64-room hotel is ¥41 million in the red since its opening and officials worry whether they can continue.

The hotel is open to anyone residing in Okinawa, but officials cite the popularity of package tours, and the lack of publicity as the main reasons for the hotel’s troubles.
