Rain and Cloud Strand 2,200 Island Travelers

Date Posted: 2000-05-05

Golden week got off to a bad start for travelers to Miyako and Yeayama Islands, as Air Nippon and Japan Trans-Ocean Airways had to cancel 28 flights due to bad weather. As a result 2,200 people were stranded.

Two flights that had taken off from Naha to Ishigaki had to return to Naha as they were unable to land in Ishigaki. According to officials the main reason hampering air traffic was heavy rain and low-hanging clouds that reduced the visiblity to near zero.
