Ministry to study dugong distribution, eating habits

Date Posted: 2002-02-15

The Ministry of the Environment in Tokyo reached a consensus at a Feb. 8 meeting regarding methods to be employed in researching dugongs and their eating habits in Okinawa. The ministry plans to conduct extensive research on the sea creatures during the month of February. The study has four components: the distribution of dugongs, their genetic characteristics, their eating preferences and the location of seaweed. Dugong distribution will be studied through aerial research carried out over the waters of Motobu, where the existence of dugongs has not yet been confirmed.
