Pay Phone Company Gives Out Free Call Cards

Date Posted: 2000-04-29

This week the KDD OK pay-phone company is visiting various locations in Okinawa and giving away free KDD-OK pre-paid paid phone cards. The offer lasts until June 30th.

The ubiquitous orange-red KDD OK pay-phones are a familiar sight to just about everyone who’s been stationed on or traveled through military installations in Okinawa or Mainland Japan. The phones, which have been in service for over 10 years are known to long timers as “P-Phone s”. They have provided service members and their families a convenient means of keeping in touch with friends and family overseas.

“The idea was to find a way for families who had just arrived and also single service members to call home easily. Before we had the phones people on-base had to go out to town to find a phone or use a friend’s phone to call family” said Kimie Takayasu of the KDD Okinawa Service Company .“After the phones were installed they were a big hit since they are so easy to use.”

Customers like LCpl Muniz, stationed at Camp Hansen agree. “I like the KDD card because it’s so easy to use. Just put it in the pay phone and dial like you would from a normal phone. Also they have them right in the barracks, so you don’t have to go looking everywhere for a phone.” Said Muniz.

The pay phones have multiplied steadily since the service began and now number over 500.
