DJs Now Rivalled by VJs

Date Posted: 2000-04-29

A VJ is a performer who mixes images, while a DJ is a performer who mixes music.

Recently, on the mainland of Japan, VJs’ names have started to appear on flyers advertising musical events. In newly opened clubs or concert halls, equipment such as projectors and multivision gear have started to be in place permanently for VJs . This phenomenon shows how popular VJs are becoming on the mainland of Japan. At last a VJ event is going to be held here in Okinawa on May 7th.

VJs can , through their images, boost a live atmosphere. The effect of a VJ is as important as the music. The VJs’ work is different from videoclips, because they are live performances. VJs can express rhythms and accentuate a live atmosphere by mixing images. This coming event is organized by a visual arts team, “Tokyo X-Ray” with other visual artists who found each other on the internet, and is named “FUSE”. The theme of this event is “The possibility and popularisation of the latest VJ”. The event, started in 1998, has so far taken place four times. The previous events were for sales promotions of Fujifilm, Toshiba, Mixman Technonlogy (Now, Beatink) and Intel. All the past events had large number of guests, 1500 to1800, sometimes, more than they had room for.
