Okinawans asked to conserve water due to low dam levels

Okinawa’s dams and reservoirs were storing water at only 70.8 percent of capacity as of Feb. 7 due to an abnormally low amount of rainfall since October. Although not yet at a level requiring water rationing, officials fear the situation could worsen if precipitation remains low in the face of increasing water demand. A group specializing in drought measures in Okinawa held an extraordinary directors’ meeting on Feb. 7 for the first time in five-and-a-half years during which a decision was made to ask Okinawan residents to conserve water.
