Plan to Stop Tree Roots Penetrating Pavement

Date Posted: 2000-04-29

Ancient deigo trees in Naha City are causing headaches to city street maintenance people, as their roots are cracking the pavement of a pedestrian street in front of the Naha City Assembly building. Especially in danger are women in high heels and several have stumbled at the site and suffered minor injuries. Naha City Construction and Maintenance Bureau has drafted a plan to make a reinforced concrete ceiling to be buried about three feet undergroud. The ceiling hopefully prevents the roots from growing to the surface. City officials say that they came up with the idea after consulting city officials overseas who have had similar experiences. Deigo is Okinawa’s flower symbol.
