Platform Heels Out, Comic Book Heroes In

In Japan, fashions and fads come and go faster than the perennial cherry blossoms. Just when emergency hospitals were preparing for the onslaught of broken legs and twisted ankles, caused by ultra-high platform shoes, and insurance companies were hoarding reserves to pay for them, the fashion conscious now inform us that platform shoes are passe. The newest of the new is called “cosple,” Japanese sort of costume play. This involves dressing up as heroes or heroines of cartoons, movies or Japanese manga comic books. Over 3,000 people from all over the country attended a party in Tokyo’s Bukyo Ward April 8 to announce the arrival of the new trend. An essential part of the new fad is dancing on the streets on weekends, which aficionados say provides an excellent way to relieve everyday stress.
