Airport Location Finally Decided

Date Posted: 2000-04-29

After more than 20 years of fighting, the location of the new Ishigaki Airport was decided on, when the Prefectural New Ishigaki Airport Construction Committee published its decision on Monday to build the facility at Karadake. The airport was first planned on a landfill that was partly to cover Ishigaki’s famed blue coral colony. The plan attracted worldwide condemnation by environmentalists, and the planners had to seek other locations. Unveiling the final decision, Okinawa Vice Governor Hideo Ishikawa, who chaired the committee, praised the decision, saying “This is a very good compromise that takes into account everyone’s best interests.” Even members of groups that have fiercely opposed the new airport are resigned to the fact that the island needs a new airport and have promised to cooperate.
