Summit Donations Meager

Date Posted: 2000-04-29

The Okinawa Prefecture’s on-going fundraising efforts for the summit are in trouble with collected donations far off from the target. The prefecture set the target of collecting ¥350 million from local businesses and individuals, but so far only ¥126 million has been collected.

The Summit Promotion Committee has pledged to increase their efforts by appealing to the public and placing more collection boxes in banks and post offices. The money is needed to cover the costs of staging public events, providing transportation and lodging for journalists and officials attending the summit.

Should the public be less than generous, the Prefecture has pledged to cover the gap from its coffers.
