Seas to be Closed During Summit

Date Posted: 2000-04-29

The 11th Maritime Safety Agency unveiled its security plan for the Okinawa 2000 Summit, yesterday. The plan calls for closing the seas up to 22 kilometers offshore between Motobu Peninsula in the north and the southern tip of Okinawa Island.

The agency appealed to local fishermen’s associations and shipping companies for their support. The plan would practically stop all fishing operations, tour cruises and recreational boating on the East Coast of Okinawa during the summit. The agency invited representatives of concerned associations to discussions before a final decision, to be made shortly.
