War Photos on Display

Photos taken in the Keramas and Motobu during the Okinawan war by Lt.Gen. Simon Buckner before he was killed in action here, are currently on display at Okinawa Prefectural Archives. They were discovered by Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper in the U.S. The photos depict action at different locations, individual soldiers and civilian refugees. The collection consists of 58 color photos taken from April through June 18 when Buckner was killed. The photos are in the possession of Buckner’s son William Buckner. General Buckner’s daughter Mary Bluebaker, 77, is currently visiting Okinawa at the invitation of the Ryukyu Shimpo. According to Bluebaker, general Buckner was an avid photographer who took hundreds of photos on family occasions. (quote) “We still have hundreds of pictures taken by my father.”
