Okinawa City again rejects Awase plebiscite proposal

Date Posted: 2002-02-15

The Okinawa City Assembly decided on Feb. 6 to reject a proposal for a plebiscite questioning the necessity of the Awase landfill project. This marks the second time in less than a year that a popular vote on the issue has been rejected. After the assembly adjourned, Katsuhide Urushidani representing the citizens’ group that submitted the proposal, said that the result had been predicted and that it was disappointing since no discussions had taken place concerning the significance of the plebiscite. The following day Mayor Masakazu Nakasone visited Tokyo to demand a prompt start to the construction as well as to report the assembly’s decision.
