Trash Collector Suspended - Island Rubbish Piles Up

Date Posted: 2000-04-21

Minami Shokai, a trash collector company that had its license revoked temporarily for illegally transferring hazardous waste to the Philippines, has had to suspend its operations from April 30. Minami Shokai is the largest rubbish collecting company in Okinawa and also responsible for collecting and disposing of all trash and waste from US bases in Okinawa. However, other waste disposal companies said they are unable to receive any more waste. Alarmed Okinawa City and Minami Shokai officials are now studying a plan to keep the company operating by replacing all company directors and its president, thus effectively creating a new company. Rubbish disposal is a serious problem in Okinawa. All companies that currently receive garbage report that their landfills will be full within two years. With no new landfills due to be opened, disposing of the garbage is a rapidly emerging headache for everyone in Okinawa.
