Passengers Rescued From Glass Bottomed Boat

Date Posted: 2000-04-21

A glass bottomed tour boat with 26 passengers and crew sprang a leak in the waters off Naha yesterday. The boat radioed the 17th Maritime Safety Agency that water was coming into its engine room. The agency dispatched a patrol boat to the scene and all passengers were transferred safely onboard the patrol boat. No one was injured. According to an official at Ryukyu Kanko Sangyo, the operator of the boat, it left the port on a scheduled trip. About two miles out to sea the crew noticed that the boat’s engine room was flooded and the crew radioed for help. After the passengers were transferred to the patrol boat, water was pumped out of the boat and it drove to a repair dock in Urasoe under its own steam. Later investigation revealed that the water came in through a faulty cooling water pipe. Company officials said the boat had cleared a safety investigation only three days before.
