Miyako’s All Japan “Strongman” Triathlon - Most Ever Foreign Entrants

Date Posted: 2000-04-21

The 16th All Japan “Strongman” triathlon will be contested on Sunday on Miyako Island. The gruelling three part race starts from Yonaba Maehama beach in Shimoji town at 7:30 am on April 23rd. The triathlon includes a three kilometer swimming race, 155 kilometers of biking, and 42.195 kilometers of running. The event (reserved strictly for masochists, some would say) can take up to 14 hours. The participants are sure to have an enthusiastic audience of Miyako islanders as the sweat pours off them. This year’s triathlon will be especially international, a forerunner of the Okinawa G8 summit (when politicians will be competing for kudos rather than medals). There will be 80 participants from 21 countries and areas this year, the highest number of participants ever to have come from outside Japan.

Participating countries and areas are: Hungary, Germany, Holland, Canada, U.S.A., Australia, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, North Korea, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, New Zealand, Singapore, Philippines, Saipan, Denmark, Italy, Russia, and Hong Kong.

The total number taking part is 1500. This year, there will be a special “Summit Cup” for the winner, sponsored by Miyako Island Area Association and Ryukyu Shimpo Newspaper. For more information phone: 09807-3-1046
