Mrs Kanevil LettersDate Posted: 2000-04-14 I would like to know why it is necessary for Cass Kanevil writing for Japan Update “Society” section to continue using profanity or for anybody who writes in your paper to use bad language. It really brings discredit to the paper, is offensive and shows disrespect to readers. Please stop this. Joyce Hedeen Appalling, Embarrassing, Inflammatory, Prejudiced “Ms Kanevil” I nearly jumped for joy when I finally read some negative feedback to your "Cass Kanevil" contributions last week! Each week when I read your newspaper, I am appalled and embarrassed by the essays contributed by "Ms. Canevil." I am glad others share my disgust for this column. Her pointless, inflammatory, prejudiced, knee-jerk reactionary stories are an embarrassment to the American Military Community here in Okinawa, and only support the stereotype of American ignorance so widely believed in other countries. The only point "Ms. Kanevil" demonstrates to this reader is one in which she seems to be a bored housewife and mother stuck here in Okinawa with nothing to do but think of things which she detests and complain about them, especially American service members. Maybe she should go back to school, or get a job, or even volunteer her time to help those in need. I challenge her to try doing something kind or benevolent rather than spend her time blasting hardworking military members, including myself. As a woman, a service member and a spouse, I am disgusted by the topics "Cass Kanevil" chooses to write about, especially our military bases and services, the ones on which she depends to subsist from day to day. I certainly hope Japan update receives other negative reactions to this column and subsequently discontinues "Ms. Kanevil's" personal forum in which she uses to air her personal prejudices, hang-ups, etc. for all of Okinawa to see. This person should be ashamed of their contributions and should submit an all-inclusive apology to the readers of Japan Update. Sincerely A Concerned Reader Editor’s note: Mrs Kanevil will not have the opportunity to further practice her vocabulary in Japan Update, as she has written her last column for us. I received an abusive phone call from her last week on the subject, would you believe, of the inability of adults to control their anger in public. She had written an article on the subject, which I had not seen. The unfortunate woman, assuming this was a plot to deprive her of her public voice, launched into a tirade, using a selection of colorful anatomical adjectives that would have made a parade ground drill sergeant blanch. |
