Okinawa On World Stage But Not Much Interest in Complaints about US Bases

Whereas Okinawa was living in near obscurity as far as the rest of the world was concerned, much has changed since the decision was made to hold this year’s G8 Summit in Okinawa. All the world’s major press has devoted more space to Okinawa than perhaps all column inches written about Okinawa before. The prefecture has also created an English language homepage to promote the summit and the prefecture. But according to some officials, the response has been somewhat mixed. About 70 percent of those visiting the prefecture homepage have been from mainland Japan. Another disappointment has been the marked lack of interest of the foreign media as far as Okinawa’s complaints about the presence of the US bases are concerned.
