Teenage Extortionists Arrested

Date Posted: 2000-04-14

A gang of seven junior high school boys were arrested yesterday for extorting money from other minors in front of movie theaters and other locations at Naha’s Kokusai Street. The boys are accused of robbing money from other youths on at least 16 occasions. According to investigators, the gang members singled out young persons who appeared to be smaller, or tourists. They then asked their victims to step aside whereupon one of the gang members allegedly showed a knife to the victims and ordered them to hand over their money. They are also accused in some instances taking their victims’ jackets and other clothing items. Five of the seven boys were arrested. The two youngest, aged 13 and 14 were sent for counseling by juvenile delinquency officials.
