Date Posted: 2000-04-14

March 3 of the lunar calendar is a date of great signifigance for people influenced by Chinese culture, including Okinawans. The tide in the ocean is also at its lowest point of the year and many reefs that are normally under water emerge. Okinawan people traditonally take advantage of this phenomenon and gather shellfish and other edibles from the reefs. This is the first time such a performance has been arranged and local officials hope to make this a tradition that will attract visitors and tourists to the village.
