Prehistoric Comb and Jewelry Found at Camp Lester Ruins

Date Posted: 2000-04-08

Archaelogists digging into Irehara ruins inside Camp Lester have found artifacts dating back 5,000 years. The artifacts include pieces of jewelry and a wooden comb. The site is being researched under the sponsorship of Chatan Town Board of Education. “To find artifacts that were actually in use 5,000 years ago is very remarkable,” a spokesman for Chatan Town said when presenting the findings. He cited the fact that the area had been under water as the reason that the artifacts were so well preserved.

According to Hiroe Takamiya, a former professor in the University of the Ryukyus said that the most remarkable aspect of the find was that it proves that life in those ancient times was not as impoverished as had been popularly supposed. “These are essentially proving that people had the time and means to acquire them instead of spending their days only struggling to survive” Takamiya said.

Analysis of the comb is going to be done by National Historical Anthropology Museum in Chiba prefecture.
