Japan, US and South Korea to Discuss North Korea Policy

Date Posted: 2000-04-01

Officials from the United States, South Korea and Japan are scheduled to start holding talks in Tokyo this Thursday, March 30th to discuss policy on North Korea. US State Department spokesman James Foley said on Monday on Monday that the American delegation would be led by Ambassador Wendy Sherman and that the three officials would be discussing a range of issues in our ongoing coordination of policy towards communist North Korea.

The meeting is part of a continuing process of trilateral consultations on communist North Korea that were formalised in Hawaii last April, he added. Tension on the Korean peninsula escalated in August last year when North Korea launched the Taepodong long-range missile that flew over Japan into the Pacific Ocean.

South and North Korea remain technically at war since their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty. Japan, which wants to keep in step with the United States and South Korea as they gradually improve relations with the North, is holding five days of talks with the North Koreans from April 4th.
