Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi met with the press at Harbor View Hotel in Naha during the weekend and officially announced that a Summit dinner party is going to be held at Shuri Castle on July 22nd. He expressed the hope that the guests would enjoy the rich culture and history of Okinawa. He also said, “After seeing steady preparation for the opening of Summit, I feel encouraged by citizens of Okinawa who strongly hope for the success of Summit.” During the same press conference, he announced that he had no plan to call a general election until police reform was under way. Obuchi said that reforms within the Japanese police ranks, recently plagued with scandals, should not be delayed by general elections. He has indicated readiness to dissolve the House of Representatives only after police reforms have been made. He also said that he would consider visiting Russia to discuss the resolution of territorial disputes if the new president, Vladimir Putin, cannot visit Japan before the Summit. He left Okinawa in the afternoon on Sunday the 26th.
