Date Posted: 2000-04-01

On Monday, March 27th, Kadena's Air Force Commander James Smith and the Mayor of Okinawa city, Masakazu Nakasone announced the construction of a “Clinton Square" by Gate 2. Clinton Square will be open to both Japanese and Americans, and is going to be used as a place for friendship and understanding between Japan and the United States. Okinawa City is planning to invite President Clinton to the square when he visits Okinawa for the upcoming G8 Summit. About 2000 square meters of land was provided by U.S. Military for the project. The Mayor says he "expects this plan may help improve friendship ties between Japanese and Americans, and bring up people who may contribute to world peace in the future.”
