Letters to the editor about Whale Sharks

Date Posted: 2000-03-25

The Whale Sharks Are Not Dancing; They Want to be Free
To Whom It May Concern:

You as an adult should know that having these huge animals in a netted cage that is not even twice the size of a full-grown whale shark is wrong. These animals aren’t “dancing” as your divers say, but trying to free themselves. These poor animals want nothing more then to swim freely in the ocean which they once could before the “wonderful” fishermen came along and put out nets to catch them in. Now the fishermen are the “good” guys who are nursing them back to health. As soon as the whale sharks are in good health there will be another excuse like “The whale sharks are used to being feed so they couldn’t survive in the wild.” These whale sharks aren’t even eating like they normal do because they are in the nets. These nets are not only hurting the whale sharks but the other fish and sea animals that get caught in the nets and die. People who have been to see the whale sharks think it’s a great and all but do you ever put your self in the whales place? People love “riding” on the whales and playing with them but get REAL! These are wild animals! You aren’t even getting to see the whales in their real habitat. If you still aren’t convinced that the animals need to be free then ask someone to hang on you for a day. See how you like it.

I am a 12 year old girl and know that this isn’t my place to tell people what to do but it is easy to see that these animals need to be FREE! In the next 15 years I help guide our society and I know that I will want my children to be able to see whale sharks in their natural habitat. These animals are soon to be extinct if we, the people keep, keep on treating animals like this. Animals have rights in this world, too. They haven’t done anything to us so why do we bug them? It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that these animals should be free!

As adults you should be a good role model and set good examples. If THIS is a good example then the world has gone mad! If I have upset anyone I apologize. I am just stating my opinion as well as many others.

Shame On You!

Dear editor,

Shame on you!!! After having seen your cover photo of two divers hanging on for a ride on a captive whale shark I was virtually sick to my stomach. These divers should have known better (especially since they are instructors) and you should be embarrassed for having shown the photo (especially since it was a lousy photo to boot!!) Your paper has always shown great support of the clean beach club and their activities to better the environment around Okinawa and educate the public. This one photo just set everyone back a century in their thinking.

Shame, shame, shame!!!!

You should apologize and ensure all your readers that this is not acceptable behavior for any ocean animal!! It's the responsible thing to do!!!!
