Urasoe Police Admits Mistake on Seatbelt Case

Date Posted: 2000-03-25

The family of a boy who died in a car accident expressed doubts about the police report on the case and made the police change it. The accident occurred on January 30th on Route 330 in Oohira, Urasoe City. The Urasoe police station had previously reported in a local newspaper that 24-year-old Takao Uema had not been wearing a seatbelt when the accident occurred. However, the family members who knew that he usually wore a seatbelt expressed concern over the newspaper article. They visited Urasoe Police Station to protest, but were told that the son had not been wearing the seatbelt. The family members also talked to a man who was in the car that crashed onto the son’s car. The man attested that he had effectively seen the son wearing his seatbelt. The family members went back to the police again, and the police station finally admitted their mistake in the report. The head of police station, Yukio Ishikawa said, “We should have crosschecked the facts about that car accident more carefully. We apologize to the family members for the trouble we caused.”
