American Volunteers to Teach in Japanese Elementary Schools

Date Posted: 2000-03-25

Starting from the month of May this year, some 40 American military members and civilians working on US bases will serve as volunteer teachers at Japanese elementary schools in central Okinawa. Okinawa prefecture hopes that the cultural exchange program will improve mutual understanding of the two different cultures and prevent problems among members of both the American and local Okinawan communities in the future. American volunteers are going to visit 10 elementary schools once a week from May 1st and teach English conversation and English pronunciation. Okinawa Prefectural Education agency is planning more cultural exchange programs outside of central Okinawa.
