KHS to Host Far East Model United Nations

Date Posted: 2000-03-25

Kadena High School will host a Model United Nations session from this Thursday, March 23rd to Saturday, March 25th. Similar to the other Model United Nations held throughout the world, reflecting the actual United Nations, the session will get participants involved in several activities during the three days of the conference. There will be two essay contests, a daily newspaper provided to all delegates by contributing reporters and a letter writing campaign to different agencies concerning world issues. All delegates will be provided information about numerous different global organizations that deal with varying issues and events and have a chance to become involved.

The Model United Nations is an annual conference that brings together sixteen schools from mainland Japan, Korean, Okinawa and Guam. All DoDDS and Guam high schools, the Korean Christian Academy, JFK High School, Guam and the Japanese Kyuoyo High School of Okinawa are involved in this year’s session, with approximately 200 students acting as delegates, security guards, anti-terrorist forces, pages, reporters and secretaries.

The purpose of the Model United Nations is to make students aware of world issues through research and discussion. This year, they will be tackling issues such as the protection of newly formed democracies, the application of the convention on the prevention and punishment of genocide, and the use of satellites and space technology as weapons.

For more information on conference schedule, contact Kadena High School at 634-1216.
