Agronomic Bioengineering May be Major Issue at Summit

Last Saturday, March 18th, the Government of Japan brought up the issue of bioengineering on food products as one of the topic of discussions at the upcoming G8 Summit, citing the fact that “Safety on food products” is already one of the main issues on the Summit's agenda. Since the United States has a careful approach concerning food bioengineering, some countries may have different opinions. There is already a plan to institute a safety standard on bioengineering by 2003. Japanese government officials have expressed the hope that discussions on bioengineering during the Summit would bring about more sensitization on matters of food safety. On the other hand, the government emphasizes on the benefits of bioengineering in cases such as mass production of crops, which may help agriculture in developing countries.
