Irish Highland Games, St. Patrick’s Day Celebration on Foster

Date Posted: 2000-03-17

In the spirit of Celtic tradition, Camp Foster, MCCS and the Morrigan’s Pub will be hosting the 1st annual Highland games this weekend. The excitement starts Friday, March 17th, when both pubs will host giant St. Patrick’s Day bashes complete with green beer and Irish fun. A variety of events will be held on Foster both March 18th and 19th.

According to game organizers, the planning began six months ago. “ We wanted to bring something like this to Okinawa, the festival capital of Japan,” Martin McIntyre told Japan Update. The Highland games are a series of events like the open stone throw or the farmers' walk (an obstacle course). The games have their roots in Celtic tradition that honors the way in which warriors were picked for battle.

Along with the Highland games will also be soccer, rugby, and football games. There will also be kiddy rides and games as well as an arts and crafts fare and a clan tent of family crests. The Morrigan’s will also have a beer and food tent set up for the occasion.

The Highland games will start with a Parade on Camp Fostor March 18th at 9:00 a.m. The actual competition will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. For anyone without base access, tickets/passes will be available at both Morrigan’s locations free of charge. Anyone interested in setting up a table at the arts and crafts fair should call Ken Wetherill at 623-4306 or 090-4514-8549.
