Shimagaijin's fishing pointers -- February

Date Posted: 2002-02-07

Hello, fellow fishermen! Itís time again for this monthís fishing pointers. The weather has been terrible and fishing is still difficult and cold, but better weather is coming soon. This is a good time for rod repair, setting up tackle and making other preparations for the warmer months, so wait for good weather for chartering if you can. Itís just too cold! Marlin and big-eye tuna just started coming into Awase, so now is the time to get ready. March will be good fishing! At present, the winds are strong and the waves are big, so be patient and always stay up-to-date with the local weather forecasts. This season can be dangerous, so be aware of any changes in the weather.

Lately, anything caught off shore is pretty much small fish, but tuna, mahi-mahi and big-eye tuna are coming back in. If you are a diehard and want to fish offshore, ribbon fish, agwa and chin are good catches. Weíre not catching much right now, but if you go to the center marker in Awase, jigging is doing OK. Amber jack and red snapper are also being caught in Yonabaru.

Following are Februaryís fish of the month and how you can catch them:

Type Bait Method Location
Marlin 400lb Lure Trolling Awase Piles
Skip Jack Bait Boat Awase
Grouper Lure Shore Awase Port

Chris Pancoast profile

Chris Pancoast came to Okinawa about 10 years ago as a member of the U.S. Air Force and claims he started fishing at the age of three, 25 years ago. He dreamt of being a fisherman while growing up, so that is the occupation he chose to pursue. After five years of service in the military, Chris left and has been making ends meet with his love for fishing ever since. He is currently working with the Awase Harbor boat captains running his own chartering service, taking fishing fanatics wherever they want to go.
