I Can Get an AntDate Posted: 2000-03-17 ![]() Twenty-five students, divided into four groups, participated in the literary occasion. Students from Kindergarten (6-year-olds), Grade 1A, Grade 1B, and Grade 2 gave group performances, reciting poems such as "The Swing," "Now that I Can Read," "The Umbrella Brigade," and Psalm 23. Spencer White, Alex Sartor, Emily Hughes, and Jaryn Kormis received first place finishes in their respective groups; Colt Cannon, Megumi Shavers, Lorna Haney, and Martha Migita each came out second in their groups; while Lisa Dundore, Alyssia Vukoty, Nicole McGlothlin, Derek Moore, and J. B. Baty emerged third in their respective groups. The speech contest continued to a second round in which the first place winners of each group recited their poems for a grand championship. All of the children displayed great enthusiasim for poetry, but Jaryn Kormis, a 9-year-old 3rd Grader, was crowned “Grand Champion” by the jury. The teachers and students of OCSI have been organizing and managing the event for over ten years, with three teachers of the school judging the contestants on presentation, expression, and memory. Below is a reproduction of the young Jaryn's poetry: I can get an ant. Why didn't I think of that? It's so much smaller than a dinosaur, It's so much easier to keep. It wouldn't make a single sound, Not even a single roar or peep. Besides, my mom would never see it, My mom would never know. She couldn't find my tiny ant If she looked high or low. It wouldn't eat or drink much, It wouldn't shed or chew. An ant and I can live together--forever Our whole lives through. |
