Okinawa Electric Co. Donates ¥35 Million to Summit

Date Posted: 2000-03-10

Okinawa Electric Co. and its 10 affiliated companies have donated ¥35 million to Okinawa Prefecture. The money is supposed to be their contribution towards the costs of hosting the G-8 Summit in Nago in July. Okinawa Electric Co. Chairman Kouto Nakaima handed over the funds to Governor Keiichi Inamine on Tuesday, March 7th.

Officials at the Okinawa Summit Promotion Citizens’ Council that handles such donations said that they have so far received a total of ¥86 million in donations from 194 companies, still far from their target of ¥350 million. Prefecture officials are hoping to raise the money in order to alleviate the crunch that hosting the summit is putting on the prefecture’s budget.

Receiving the money, Governor Inamine stated, “We appreciate greatly these donations. Okinawa Electric Co. group of companies is setting a good example and this money will be of great help top us.” Inamine went on to explain that this particular donation would go towards landscaping roadsides, volunteer workers’ allowances and general maintenance. Okinawa Electric Co. is also sending a staff of three to help with preparing for the summit.
