More Okinawa, Less of the World, PleaseBy: Paul Brezna Date Posted: 2000-03-05 Though I am not in the habit of writing letters to the editor, I feel compelled to voice my concerns regarding your publication. Though I appreciate the new layout of your periodical, I must take objection with the recent changes in content. I read your paper in order to remain abreast of local events and entertainment. As such, I continue to enjoy the translation of local news, featured articles on area restaurants and recaps of local entertainment events. However, I do not see the need to publish information on US politics. In the past few weeks, you have devoted several columns of your already scarce print space to the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries as well as a series of articles on Dr. King. Though I do not doubt these articles are newsworthy, I question the motivation behind placing them in your local periodical. Need I remind you that you are a weekly paper andthe political information you publish is several days old by the time you go to press? Further, the topics have already been dissected and discussed ad nauseam in the International Herald Tribune, the Japan Times, the USA Today and the Stars and Stripes. Your articles contribute no new information and are obvious re-writes of information obtained from the wire services and the Internet. When determining which articles to include in the weekly edition, I ask that you please remember the title of your newspaper, the Japan Update. Return to the subject matter covered prior to the New Year: local news with occasional news from around Asia. Thank you for your time, Paul Brezna. EDITOR'S NOTE: Please, read Japan Update's response - EDITORIAL. |
