Millionaire TV show to invade Japanese airwaves

Date Posted: 2000-03-05

According to Fuji Television officials, the world-famous TV show, “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” is coming to Japan. Fuji Television, one of Japan's major networks, announced last Friday, February 25th, that it will start airing its own version of the show from Thursday, April 20th, after it buys format rights from Britain’s Celador Productions.

“Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” will be the first foreign TV format to be shown in prime time on any Japanese network.

Due to laws limiting the amount of money that can be given out on any game show in Japan, Fuji TV programming director Chihiro Kameyama said that the top prize for “Millionaire Quiz” - the name they intend to use for Japan’s version of the show - will be the legal maximum of ¥10 million (roughly $90.000).
