Teenage Students Lose Grades for Colored Hair

Date Posted: 2000-03-05

Twelve senior students at Hikone Prefectural Industrial High School in Shiga Prefecture recently had 70% of their final exam scores deducted for showing up with dyed hair and body piercing jewelry. According to a news agency report published by several Japanese newspapers, the school had warned students before the five-day exams in January that points would be deducted for violating the dress code.

Twelve students who flouted the rules on the first and second days of the exams were forced to take them in a separate room. In Japan, the school year typically ends in March.
