Kyoto Experiences Little Earthquake

Date Posted: 2000-03-05

An earthquake, considered by most seismologists not to be very serious, shook Japan's ancient capital of Kyoto in the early hours of Sunday (12:03 a.m.). The local police reported that there were no immediate casualties or damage to property. The tremor was registered at a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale. According to the Central Meteorological Agency, the moderate quake was centered about 12 miles underground in southern Kyoto. The agency also said there were no dangers of “tsunami” - or tidal waves set off by earthquakes. Kyoto is a city situated about 230 miles southwest of Tokyo, the capital city of Japan.
