Survey: Okinawan and proud of it

Date Posted: 2002-01-10

A survey conducted by the Ryukyu Shimpo in December has revealed that 85 percent of Uchinanchu (Okinawans) are proud of their Okinawan identity and are quite conscious of their heritage. The poll also showed that many Okinawans are demanding environmental conservation as well as economic prosperity in the future. Most are satisfied with their current lives, although some criticized the fact that the indigenous Okinawan language is disappearing. In addition, people complained that communication with neighbors is on the decline. The poll was sent to 1,500 Okinawans who were randomly selected from a voter list. A total of 1,086 people responded to the questionnaire.
