Okinawan Entertainers Making Prefecture Known Ahead of Summit

Date Posted: 2000-03-05

A group of Okinawan entertainers embarked on a month-long trip from Naha Airport, Wednesday, heading for the US and Canada to introduce traditional Okinawan culture and entertainment to audiences in Los Angeles, Toronto, Ottawa, New York and Washington, DC.

The trip is funded by grants from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Okinawa Prefecture International Friendship Fund.

Wishing the group good luck, Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine said that “the group has an important mission in showing people in the US and Canada that Japan has different cultures in different regions, of which Okinawa is one.”

The group includes students from the Okinawa Prefecture College of Arts and Music, and also professional local entertainers.
