Bolivian Okinawans request construction aid from Japan

Date Posted: 2002-02-07

Prefectural Culture and Environment head Masakuni Nagayama visited Foreign Affairs Ambassador to Okinawa Hiroshi Hashimoto to request aid for construction of a road connecting an Okinawan village Bolivia to the capital city, Santa Cruz. Hashimoto accepted the request and reportedly passed it on it to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo. Many Okinawan immigrants live in the village, located 65 kilometers from Santa Cruz, whose road is badly in need of improvement as a result of excessive water accumulation during the rainy season. The village has estimated that $29 million is needed for the repairs and has been seeking support from the Okinawan government as well for the project.
