Yoshikatsu Offers Savory Dishes at Affordable Prices

By: “Grand Chef” Keizo Nakasone

Date Posted: 2000-02-27

With only three small tatami rooms and a bar, one would not have to worry about being lost in a crowd at Yoshikatsu. The restaurant has a lively, intimate atmosphere that allows the diner to indulge in great conversation with friends and company.

Toshikazu Isa’s brother first opened this sushi bar 18 years ago, but Isa has managed the restaurant for the past 12 years. Yoshikatsu specializes in sushi dishes, including tuna, shrimp, marlin, cucumber, salmon, and crab, among others. The prices of sushi and sashimi sets served for 1 to 10 people vary from ¥1200 to ¥5000. Additionally, Isa serves a delicious variety of boiled, grilled, and fried appetizers, as well as fish, vegetable, and meat entrees. Yoshikatsu’s appetizers are a great introduction of what is in store for the entire meal (¥1200) and the deep fried chicken pieces (¥600) are wonderful ways to begin a meal. There are over 10 set courses to choose from, containing grilled or fried chicken, fish, shrimp, or pork for ¥1200 or more. A great choice is always the Maku no Uchi (special of the house) - a set of raw fish, fried and boiled vegetables, a vinegared dish of vegetables and fish, soup and rice. The Tempura or Tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) sets are a safe bet, and cooked to perfection for only ¥1200.

Yoshikatsu also has a set for children for only ¥600 that includes a salad, hamburger meat, fried shrimp, fried potatoes, rice, soup, and pickles. Take-out and special orders are welcome. There are also daily specials offered on the board behind the bar for those looking for something different.

The staff doesn’t speak English, so Japanese help for orders may be an imperative. However, English menus are available and foreigners are always welcome to come in and take a look before they make any take-out requests. For reservations or take-out orders in Japanese, call 098-932-8179. Yoshikatsu is open from 5:00 p.m. till 1:00 a.m. Thursday to Tuesday. Only Yen is accepted. Directions: Heading north toward Kadena Air Base, take a left onto Rt. 85. Go straight until you come to the Yamazato intersection where you can see the Loop Coffee and Tea shop on your left. Take a right at that traffic light, and Yoshikatsu is on the right across from Hot Spar.
